Tour of Maras Moray

Towards the northewest of he town o Maras are located the famous Salineras known by some as “mines of salt” they are constituted by 3000 small wells with an average area of some 5 m2 (squared meters) built in a side of the inclination of the mountain “Qaqawiñay” that during the inca epoch of dry are filled or watered every 3 days with salted water that emerges from a natural stream that located in the upper part of the wells so that when water evaporates, the salt kept in this gentlly eliminates and becomes solid.

That process will continue for approximately a month until obtaining a considerale volume of solid salt, for some 10 cms. Height from the floor that afterwards is hit and thus granulated; which will be bagged in plastic sack and sent to the markets of the region; today that salt is being given with iodine so its consumption is not harmful.
